Spay or Neuter?
Spaying or neutering your cat is strongly recommended to help control the “unwanted” pet population. The surgery is performed under a general anesthetic, and pain medication is sent home for several days to minimize any discomfort that your dog may be feeling post surgery.
Female cats -- Your female cat can come into heat as early as 5 months old. They are very fertile at this time. The heat cycle lasts approximately 2-3 weeks and will repeat every 2-3 weeks until your cat is bred or spayed. An encounter with an intact male cat means certain pregnancy. Cats can be quite nasty during heat cycles and can be quite aggressive with their owners. The female, even if kept indoors, will attract all the local toms to call and fight outside her door. These visitors will also spray all over your house – not a delightful experience. The ovariohysterectomy or spay is the surgical removal of the uterus and the ovaries. This procedure can be done at 5 months of age, and no age limit thereafter. It has been proven that as the female dog gets older; there is a significant increase in the incidence of mammary cancer and uterine infections if she has not been spayed. Spaying before she has any signs of heat cycles will virtually eliminate the chances of either. There is mounting evidence that this is also true of cats. Take one non-spayed cat. Multiply by 7 (promiscuous) years, and you have a potential of 420,000 cats possibly born!
Male cats -- Male cats can go through a significant personality change as they mature. They can become very possessive of their territory and mark it with urine to ward off other cats. The tomcat’s urine develops a very strong odor that will be almost impossible to remove from your house. Male cats also try to enlarge their territory by fighting with other male cats. Fighting may result in severe infections, and abscesses, which are detrimental to his health. The longer he sprays and fights, the less likely it is that neutering will put an end to this behavior. The castration or neuter is the surgical removal of the testes. This procedure can be done at 4-5 months of age. |
